“Ghoomer” Review: It’s not a film about Cricket. It’s a film about human determination!

CineEye, August 21, 2023

Director R Balki takes us on a journey through a charged sports comeback story with ‘Ghoomer,’ leaving no room for ambiguity. The film strikes a balance between intense moments and emotional resonance, though it occasionally tilts into excessive sentimentality, particularly in its climax. Co-written by R Balki alongside Rahul Sengupta and Rishi Virmani, the screenplay paints a vivid picture of the triumph of human spirit over adversity, drawing inspiration from real-life instances. There is a sense of success in delivering an uplifting fictional story, yet a bit more restraint could have added a layer of authenticity to the storytelling.

The narrative unfolds around Anina Dixit (Saiyami Kher), a rising cricket star who loses her right hand in an accident just after being selected to play for India against England. Padam “Paddy” Singh Sodhi (Abhishek Bachchan), a former cricketer grappling with his own demons, steps in to offer Anina a new perspective and a chance to continue her journey. ‘Ghoomer’ crafts an underdog tale that reflects the human capacity to rise from the depths. The film draws inspiration from real-life Hungarian shooter Karoly Takacs, whose achievements serve as a foundation for Anina’s story. While cricket might not seem like a one-handed sport, the narrative challenges this notion. Anina’s journey is marked by obstacles, while Paddy’s coaching style tests her limits. Paddy’s evolution and his commitment to Anina’s growth shine in the film’s most compelling moments. The monologue where Abhishek delves into Paddy’s history is a masterstroke that magnifies the complexity of his character.

Paddy’s tough-love approach creates an intriguing dynamic, the friction between his gruff exterior. Abhishek’s portrayal of Paddy injects vigor into the story, his eyes conveying the inner turmoil of a flawed man burdened by his past. Paddy’s transformation from an alcoholic to a tough coach underscores Abhishek’s versatility and enriches the narrative’s depth.

Meanwhile, Anina’s determination gives the narrative its tension and depth. Saiyami Kher, who portrays Anina wonderfully, resonates with audiences through her performance of despair and determination. Her struggles are palpable in every shot, and her growth serves as a testament to the power of grit and resilience.

Shabana Azmi’s portrayal of Anina’s hard-nosed grandmother adds a grounding element to the film. As the scorekeeper and source of wisdom, her presence guides Anina’s path, providing a counterbalance to the challenges she faces. Amitabh Bachchan’s cameo enhances the film, his wisdom complementing the core theme. His seasoned presence adds a layer of emotional depth and serves as a reminder of his legacy in cinema.

The competent cinematography, sound design, and editing  complements the films narrative rhythm and elevates the overall experience. Through its strong performances and moving scenes, ‘Ghoomer’ becomes a milestone in Abhishek’s career. The film isn’t just about cricket; it delves into the complex realm of human emotions, bolstered by Saiyami Kher and Angad Bedi’s contributions.

Overall, we would recommend this film. Even if you are not a fan of cricket, this film is worth watching since it is beyond cricket. This film is about determination and grit.
