Alia Bhatt’s experience while portraying the role of ‘Sehmat’.

CineEye, April 11, 2018September 26, 2019

The much awaited trailer of Junglee Pictures and Dharma Productions ‘Raazi’, directed by Meghna Gulzar, is an adaptation of Harinder Sikka’s novel, Calling Sehmat, and stars Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal in pivotal roles.

Alia Bhatt’s character in Raazi is a young, naive girl who decides to risk her life for her country. When asked about her preparation, she mentions how there was a lot of Technical preparation required when it came to playing Sehmat. She had to improve her Urdu and then unlearn what she had picked up. This is because she plays a Kashmiri, and wasn’t required to speak chaste Urdu or Hindi. She also had to learn how to drive a Jonga (a kind of jeep used by the armed forces). Emotionally, one would have never been able to prepare for the journey she set out on, because once the shooting started, it was relentless. They shot nine scenes a day!

When it comes to the character of ‘Sehmat’, Alia says that the guilt that Sehmat feels as a wife was the toughest to portray. From the trailer it can be seen that  that Alia plays a daughter,a wife and a spy. She goes on by sharing how she learned about the selflessness of the people and the willingness with which they would give up everything for their nation.  A parent putting a child’s interest before his or hers is a great deal, but to put your country’s interest before everything else is even greater.

We are all looking forward to ‘Raazi’, especially when it comes to Alia Bhatt onscreen portrayal of ‘Sehmat’

Raazi, presented by Junglee Pictures and Dharma Productions, and produced by Vineet Jain, Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta, releases on May 11, 2018.
