“October” review: An emotional journey Chirag Shah, April 13, 2018September 26, 2019 Many filmmakers have a trademark style, or certain themes that they are usually associated with. When we think of Shoojit Sircar, we think of a filmmaker who gave us the quirky comedy “Vicky Donor”, but also the hard hitting “Madras Café”. Then once again a quirky “Piku”. Oh, and who can forget his first film “Yahaan” which may have not done well in the box office, but was praised by critics! Now we have “October”… With his newest film, he delves into a much more emotional journey, and proves that his trademark style IS his versatility and range as a filmmaker. ‘October’ is the type of film where the emotions of our central character move us forward. The emotion is the plot. This film delves into human complexity and confusion. It would be wrong for me to give away even a hint about what the film is actually about, so I’ll move straight to the review instead. This films pacing is perfect, and the script has been nicely written by Juhi Chaturvedi. Everything moves forward like a river, although there is just one criticism that I have when it comes to the script. While the journey is smooth, from the beginning till the end, we aren’t really giving a broader understanding of what it is that connects our central character Dan to Shiuli. But maybe that was intentional because sometimes we ourselves don’t understand. There are certain relationships in our lives where we can’t explain where the connection or bond came from, yet somehow, we are affected by them. Or perhaps I’m trying to give logic to a flaw, like many do. That is debatable. Like always, Shoojit Sircars direction is impressive. It’s very obvious that he works very closely with his writer and everyone on the team. The film is focused on what it wants to tell us, and the visuals go perfectly with the story and the various hidden contexts throughout. The length of the shots also fit the particular emotion of that moment. When we are introduced to the characters lifestyle, the shots and camera work are quick, just enough for us to delve into the world. Then when we start getting connected to the characters, the shots slow down. The editing goes accordingly as well. Another technical aspect that stands out is the music. It is soothing. On the acting front, Varun Dhawan has succeeded! For the first time, we see him is a role like this, and he has done justice. He literally carried the film forward. Banita Sandhu is a revelation. While she may not have much to do, she is expressive where she needs to be. Her eyes speak in this film. The supporting cast perfectly add on to the emotions. Over all ‘October’ is worth a watch for the emotional journey. A well-made film. If you want to see something different from Varun Dhawan, then go for it! 3.5 out of 5 stars Movie Reviews
