“Zero” Review: A decent film with a “good film” hidden inside it somewhere.

Chirag Shah, December 21, 2018September 26, 2019

What we have here is a film that has a lot going for it. You have the romance of Shahrukh, the glamour of Katrina and the charisma of Anushka Sharma. There is grandeur and since this film starts off in small town India, it also has a rooted feel to it. The character of Bauua is a dwarf and is always put down for his height. He is on a constant search for purpose and always wants to prove his worth. Since he is short in size, and wants to live tall. Basically, this film is his about his journey, and how 2 women change his perspective. It’s a coming of age film. The main question is, does the film come together as a well-executed product, with a cohesive and intriguing story?

The thought and idea behind this film is commendable. There are both sweet and entertaining moments throughout the film as well. But sadly, the entire plot does not come together as properly as it should have. The film starts of well, and the love story between Bauua and Aafia is put together nicely.  The entire first half is decent, from a plot and screenplay standpoint. We are kept hooked. Unfortunately, in the second half, the film loses itself. The inner dilemma of a man trying to find his worth is interesting and connectable, but the way in which it is showcased seems too far-fetched. Many moments in the second half feel truly unnecessary and forced. There are times in which the illogical situations are camouflaged with a particular tone and style of direction and writing, however the mask eventually falls off. Cinematic liberty can only go so far. There are many unscientific moments as well. The entire Nasa element in the film is extremely unrealistic.

While the screenplay is flawed, and there are elements that can’t be taken seriously, this doesn’t take away the fact that this is an enjoyable film in parts. One just wishes they did more research when it comes to Nasa and science. Bauua is a character who is constantly running and this is very much relatable since we are all searching for something. This aspect of the films plot works. From a technical standpoint, the cinematography is nice, the editing could have been better, the production design is superb and the music is the strength of the film. On the acting front, it is actually Katrina Kaif who stands out. Shahrukh brings out his usual style of romance in this movie and also tries something fresh. It feels great to see his charming personality on screen. Anushka has acted out a challenging role with perfection. In short, the acting takes this film to another level.

Overall, this is a film worth watching because somewhere, hidden inside the world of bauua, there is a really good film. It’s definitely a one-time watch for those who love films that follow the journey of one man.
