According to sources, the movie has been selected as it deals with a global issue and delves into the harrowing events surrounding the severe 2018 Kerala floods that wreaked havoc in the state.

Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, who co-wrote the screenplay with Akhil P. Dharmajan, the film features a star-studded cast, including Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Narain, and Lal, alongside an ensemble supporting cast.

The film’s selection as India’s official entry for the 96th Academy Awards is a testament to its powerful storytelling and the compelling portrayal of a global issue. The 2018 Kerala floods were a catastrophic event that left a deep impact on the region, and ‘2018’ captures the resilience and heroism displayed by individuals during this crisis. Directed with precision and sensitivity, ‘2018’ not only narrates the tragic events of the floods but also highlights the indomitable spirit of humanity in the face of adversity. It resonates with audiences by addressing a global issue that transcends geographical boundaries.

The decision to send ‘2018’ to the Oscars underscores the growing recognition of Indian cinema on the international stage, particularly films that tackle important global subjects. As ‘2018’ prepares to represent India at the Oscars in 2024, it carries with it the hopes and aspirations of a nation, as well as the message that cinema can serve as a powerful medium for raising awareness about global issues and celebrating the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Along with getting good reviews, ‘2018’ also turned out to be a massive hit at the box office.

The 96th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles.
