Ganapath: A Hero is Born Review: Tiger Shroff’s Striking Performance Elevates a Flawed Tale.

CineEye, October 21, 2023

The trailer boasted a slew of intense action sequences, promises an adrenaline-filled adventure. Still, in reality, it falls short of delivering a coherent and gripping storyline.

The narrative is set in a dystopian world, hinting at a global nuclear war that left society divided. A severe class divide prevails, where the affluent live in comfort while the poor struggle to find sustenance. Within this grim backdrop, the poor population holds on to a prophecy that Ganapath, their messiah, will one day emerge to end their suffering.

On the wealthier side of the divide is Guddu, played by Tiger Shroff, who aids an Englishman named John in finding fighters from the impoverished segment for a competition. The fights are rigged, and John works closely with Dalini, the mastermind behind the competition, to ensure victory. Unbeknownst to many, Guddu is destined to be Ganapath, and the film chronicles his journey from an ordinary man to a hero.

While the premise is promising, Vikas Bahl’s execution leaves much to be desired. The film stumbles with underdeveloped mythology, weak world-building, and an almost absent character arc. The story’s lack of depth and development makes it feel as if it was written for a younger audience, with the considerable budget added as an afterthought to appeal to adults.

The cast does their best, but they can only work with the material provided. Tiger Shroff excels in action sequences, showcasing his signature style and charisma. However, the film falters in emotional scenes, leaving Shroff to compensate with shouts instead of conveying deeper emotions.Kriti Sanon, despite her efforts, ends up in a secondary role, with limited opportunity for impact. The supporting cast receives even less screen time, with Shroff’s swag dominating the proceedings.

Technically, the film boasts striking visuals in parts, particularly during scenes set in Ladakh. However, the post-apocalyptic and Silver City settings sometimes appear unconvincing on screen. While Shroff’s action sequences are visually appealing, certain green-screen effects, especially in close-up composite scenes, leave much to be desired.

The background score captures attention at times, but the songs are not particularly memorable, with one even appearing to be incomplete. These technical hiccups are surprising for a big-budget production in 2023, raising questions about the film’s overall polish.

In summary, Ganapath: A Hero Is Born offers glimpses of brilliance within a flawed narrative. Despite Tiger Shroff’s standout performance and some visually engaging moments, the film’s shortcomings, underdeveloped characters, and technical issues hold it back from realizing its full potential. It’s an adventure that could have been so much more, but ultimately leaves viewers craving depth and cohesion.
