Tejas marks Kangana Ranaut’s fifth flop in a row: 50% shows cancelled

CineEye, November 2, 2023

Kangana Ranaut’s Tejas received mixed reviews from the critics but the film has clearly failed to leave a mark at the box office. It earned merely a crore on its opening day and the lifetime collections are likely to be less than Rs 10 crores. Recently, several exhibitors from across the country also opened up about Tejas debacle and revealed that they have to cancel 50 per cent of their shows because of low occupancy.

Manoj Desai, the owner of Mumbai’s iconic Gaiety Galaxy called the response to Kanagana Ranaut starrer ‘worse’ and told Bollywood Hungama, “On Sunday, we managed to get 100 viewers. For the rest of the shows, the number of moviegoers was less than 100.” Desai shared that even though he has decided to continue playing Tejas on the weekdays in Gaiety, the film will not be played in the smaller audis.

“The occupancy was bad even on a Sunday. There are hardly 10-12 people in each show. From Monday, more than 50% of shows are discontinued,” another exhibitor told the entertainment portal. He further argued that Vikrant Massey’s 12th Fail, which released on the same day, is doing better business.

Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar also called the Kangana Ranaut starrer an ‘unmitigated disaster’ and shared, “For the first time this year, the morning show in my theatre got cancelled because of zero ticket sales. Hardly 20-30 people were there in the rest of the shows.”

It should be noted that Tejas marks Kangana Ranaut’s fifth flop in a row after Dhaakad (2022), Thalaivii (2021), Panga (2020) and Judgementall Hai Kya (2019). On the other hand, Kangana’s recently released Chandramukhi 2 had earned close to Rs 40 crore.

In Tejas, Kangana is playing the role of an Air Force pilot who is on a mission to fight terrorism. Produced by RSVP, the film boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Anshul Chauhan, Varun Mitra, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Vishak Nair in pivotal roles. The movie is directed by Sarvesh Mewara and produced by Ronnie Screwvala.

Meanwile, Kangana will next be seen in Emergency. The film will be released next year.
