The single-screen theaters tussle between Prabhas’s “Salaar” and SRK’s “Dunki” has escalated

CineEye, December 16, 2023

With the approaching Christmas weekend of 2023, the tussle for screen dominance between Prabhas’s “Salaar” and SRK’s “Dunki” has escalated, particularly in single-screen theaters, marking a significant clash release.

While multiplexes in North India have strategically allocated screening percentages—46% for “Dunki,” 30% for “Salaar,” and smaller portions for “Aquaman” and “Animal”—the scenario is different in the single-screen circuit.

According to Anil Thadani, a key exhibitor, has secured a formidable 50% of single screens for “Salaar” and intends to expand this showcasing, primarily targeting mass audiences. According to Bollywood Hungama, the situation of show-sharing appears less ideal than anticipated. Exhibitors have seemingly chosen sides, with some exclusively allocating screenings to “Salaar” and others to “Dunki.” There’s an evident reluctance from certain distributors to share screenings with competitors, resulting in exclusive allocations for individual films.

The report further stated that the overall showcasing heavily favors “Dunki” in the North Indian market, a trend expected given SRK’s recent successes with blockbusters like “Pathaan” and “Jawan.” Projections indicate a distribution ratio of 48% for “Dunki,” 40% for “Salaar,” with the remainder for “Aquaman” and “Animal” at an all-India level.
