Jawan Review: Inside an adrenaline rush of a film, Jawan delivers a powerful punch

CineEye, September 8, 2023

In the realm of message-driven cinema, Jawan delivers a powerful punch. Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, an army officer facing injustice, is the central figure. His mission is left in shambles, forcing his son to pick up the pieces. While the film is steeped in emotional drama and theatrical flair, Shah Rukh’s dual role as both father and son stands out as Atlee’s trump card.

The film does have its moments of preachiness, particularly in the first half, and it grapples with pacing issues. Lengthy dialogues about making the world a better place abound, with Shah Rukh Khan’s monologue on the importance of exercising one’s right to vote standing out as a memorable and timely moment. Jawan’s screenplay does have its potholes and flaws, but it sets itself apart through exceptional execution. Shah Rukh flawlessly embodies Atlee’s blockbuster vision, with the camera treating him like a muse. Although the supporting cast in Jawan may not have substantial roles, they contribute to the film’s grandeur, with Shah Rukh Khan at the forefront.

Jawan promises a cinematic spectacle perfect for the big screen. It definitely succeeds at offering an enjoyable cinematic journey. Jawan’s combination of action, emotion, and drama make it a ride worth embarking upon. In the world of action heroes, Shah Rukh Khan is redefining the genre like never before. He’s bidding adieu to his iconic romantic roles as Raj and Rahul and fully embracing the fiery characters of Pathaan and Jawan in Atlee’s ambitious action-packed drama. So, in this regards, the film is undoubtedly a rollercoaster ride filled with unexpected twists and turns in this modern Robin Hood tale. SRK, alongside his tech-savvy, gun-toting comrades, leads the charge in Jawan, a cinematic melting pot of nods to pop culture. Think Money Heist, Squid Game, The Dark Knight Rises, classic Hindi melodies, and even a touch of The Lion King. However, the real enchantment here emanates from the extraordinary fusion of SRK and Atlee.

In his unique style, SRK puts his own spin on the iconic James Bond line, playfully declaring, “Rathod. Vikram Rathod. Naam toh suna hoga?” Amidst the whirlwind of revenge and chaos, the Bollywood superstar retains his tough exterior while exuding his signature soft, sensitive charm. With seamless finesse, he immerses himself in Atlee’s uncharted territory, co-piloting a high-octane action thriller brimming with emotions and family drama.

Vijay Sethupathi’s portrayal of the antagonist is nothing short of terrific, especially in the scene where he hilariously channels Santa Claus with a menacing twist. Deepika Padukone makes a captivating appearance in an extended cameo alongside Shah Rukh, and their chemistry is delightful, even though her character could have been more substantial. Unfortunately, the female brigade doesn’t receive as much screen time as one would hope. In this case, Nayanthara does well. Meanwhile Sunil Grover’s presence feels somewhat out of place.

Jawan also courageously pays homage to fatherhood and the indomitable strength of women, artfully balancing personal, political, and social narratives. SRK’s fearless call outs against religious politics and his unwavering faith in democracy take center stage, earning thunderous applause. Sumit Arora, Atlee, and Ramanagirivasan masterfully craft dialogues that seamlessly navigate between humor, tragedy, and vengeance.

Promoted as an Anirudh (Ravichander) musical, the film’s background score and songs seamlessly complement its style and thematic essence. While tracks like “Zinda Banda” and “Chaleya” shine, their placements may occasionally feel somewhat abrupt. Despite a narrative free of major distractions, the film’s 2-hour and 49-minute runtime could have benefited from a tighter edit. For aficionados of action, an unceasing surge of adrenaline awaits, commencing with the riveting opening sequence.

Overall, Jawan is a fun film, which also delves into important messaging. Also with that it masterfully capitalizes on SRK’s enduring star power without ever becoming overpowered by it. It’s definitely worth a watch for those who want an adrenaline rush!

3.5 out of 5 stars.
