Evelyn Sharma – A Diva With A Purpose!

CineEye, March 1, 2018September 26, 2019

EVELYN SHARMA is a German model and actress. She marked her film debut with the 2006, American film ‘Turn left’. She made her Bollywood debut playing the role of Lubaina Snyder in the 2012 Bollywood film ‘From Sydney with Love’ and shot to success with Ayan Mukerji’s ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani ‘ opposite Ranbir Kapoor, produced by Karan Johar. Along with acting and modeling, she also runs an NGO called ‘Seams For Dreams’

Q. You started Your Bollywood career in 2012 with the movie, “From Sydney with Love”. You are successful in both Modeling and Films. How has been the journey so far?

A. Hailing from a small town in Germany and being a complete outsider to the industry, my journey in Bollywood has definitely been a challenging one. Although the modeling industry had welcomed me with loving arms for my mixed Indian looks, my first ticket to Bollywood came when I was signed as the brand ambassador for a major beauty brand. Ever since, opportunities kept flowing. Having signed 5 films in my very first year, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with the biggest banners of Bollywood in over a dozen films. God has been kind and my journey has been nothing short of exciting, with great thanks to my mentors, who have guided me throughout, and my German upbringing of dedication and hard work.

Q. You are remembered as Lara from the movie, “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”. How had been working with Ayan Mukherjee.

A. When I was roped in to play the character of Lara from the movie ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ I felt a lot of pressure doing things right. With such a big production every shot counts! We were still shooting on film as well. But the Ayan, Ranbir and the team were amazing. I have never worked with anyone so motivating and always full of praise for my performance. It made it very easy to play the cute ditz who flirts with Ranbir for a couple of months during the shoots! What more could a girl want! Jokes aside – I’m a huge fan of Ayan’s work and I can’t wait to see his next with Ranbir
and Alia – Bhramastra!

Q. You are slowly positioning yourself as an actress inclined towards social cause. Is Salman Khan an inspiration/ what inspired You?

A. I love that Salman  wants to inspire his audience with good messages in his films and a retail brand attached to social causes – I think that’s fame used right and certainly inspires me, too! As my career in Bollywood started taking shape and I became more popular, I wanted to use this recognition for a philanthropic cause too. I love India and I want to give back to my father’s country. At Seams for Dreams, we take your old clothes and give them to people in need across India. So all your worn jeans, t-shirts, kurtas – donate them to us. We will make sure they will reach into the hands of someone who needs one. I believe we all have to take responsibility in creating sustainability in fashion through recycling our own clothes and the re-wear them as often as we can. #WearWashLoveRepeat is one of our awareness campaigns that we run throughout the year!

Q. Tell about Your NGO ‘Seams for Dreams’. How it all started?

A. Seams for Dreams uses the widespread love for fashion to give back to humanity. Always having wondered of what I could do with my extra clothes, but never having found the right platform to use those appropriately, my vision to contribute to the society triggered when I heard about the unfortunate incident of the Nepal Earthquake. It drove me with the idea of coming up with a foundation to help people recover what they lost and spread love and kindness all around. I feel Seams for Dreams is just not an NGO but a platform wherein you can donate all your old clothes which are then disseminated to the needy people who require basic and appropriate clothing across the country. What sets Seams for Dreams apart from all other NGOs is the involvement and active participation from the Bollywood and fashion industry to create empathy and responsiveness that your clothes can be of primary assistance to someone else! It also allows you to donate your high-end luxury outfits dusting in your closet, which our team uses at our fundraising events to run our charity foundation.

Q. Don’t You think connecting to common people shall enhance Your cause further. If Yes, How You intend to do it?

A. I think all humans are equal with a common sense of responsibility towards their neighbors. Seams For Dreams is for all Indians and we want everyone to get involved. At Seams for Dreams we do our every bit to raise awareness across the society and educate all people about the need of appropriate clothing across our country and the need for sustainability in fashion.

Q. Upcoming releases?

A. Currently, I am busy finishing shoot for my upcoming project ‘Jack & Dil’ directed by Mr. Sachin P Karande. I really am looking forward to this cute romantic comedy opposite Amit Sadh and hope my fans will love and appreciate my performance just like they did for my first lead role in Ishqedarriyaan.

 Q. Any message/ appeal to the readers.

A. Keep giving in style!
